The first 19 "Heritage Colleges" of India



The Commission received a total of 60 proposals for colleges applying to get the heritage tag. Out of the 60 proposals, the selection committee approved the granting of the status to 19. These colleges can use special grants received by them for conservation work of the campus and for specialised courses related to heritage, officials in the UGC said.

The list of colleges who have been granted the status include St Xavier's College, Mumbai; CMS College Kottayam; St Joseph College, Trichy; Khalsa College, Amritsar; St Bede?s College, Shimla, Christ Church College in Kanpur, Old Agra College, Agra; Meerut College, Meerut and Langat Singh College in Bihar's Muzaffarpur, Govt.Brennan College, Kerala; University College in Mangalore, Cotton College in Guwahati, Midnapore college in West Bengal, Govt Medical Science in Jabalpur, Deccan Education Society's Fergusson College in Pune, Hislop college in Nagpur, Govt. Gandhi Memorial Science College in Jammu, Kanya Mahavidyalya in Jalandhar and St Xavier's College in Kolkata.
  • Cotton College of Guwahati has received maximum grants of INR 4.35 crore for conservation of its heritage building.
  • Langat Singh College, has received INR 15 lakh financial aid from the UGC for developing digital library.
  • Meerut College which was established in the year 1892 has been granted INR 1.34 crore for its revamp. The funds would be utilised for renovation of Art Gallery, Geological Museum and initiating projects for identification of heritage locations in nearby areas. Former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh and former HRD Minister Murli Manohar Joshi are the eminent alumni of this college.

Knowledge is Power, and the country who knows how to wield it to its advantage, will always be one generation ahead of its time. The govt of India is realizing this, which directly makes way for infusion of fresh funds into the development and restoration of olden colleges.
